Planning as Hiking Metaphor

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Lao Tzu

One way to view planning is to think of the activity of hiking.

Your days represent the steps you take on the hike. This is the work. The steps are meant to be productive, not necessarily fun or enjoyable. Sometimes the steps and the rhythm are fulfilling, sometimes it takes all your focus to put one foot ahead of the next.

Your weeks represent what you see during the hike. These are the highlights, the views you take in, the sights you see. These are the things that make the hike worthwhile.

Your Months are the distance posts along the way. They tell you how far you have gone and how far you still have to go.

Your quarters are your milestones on the hike. Those major turning points on the trail. These could be the major sights you are hiking to, they could be the sites where you camp for the night. They are the significant points on the map of your hiking.

Your years are your ultimate destination, the reason you went on the hike in the first place.

Start with a great map of a trail towards the life you are designing.
