Organize to Answer Questions

The first step in organizing anything that is unorganized is to determine the questions you want to be answered from the resulting organization.

If you are organizing a pantry are you answering the question “Where is the …” or are you answering the question “What is about to expire?” Depending on which question you want to be answered you are going to organize it differently.

It is the same in a business analysis engagement where there is chaos and disorganization. The first thing to determine is what are the questions you want to be answered out of the organization.

Knowing the answers you need gives you a metric for determining if you are really organization or just rearranging.
