Clear Scope Statement

No matter how good the team or how efficient the methodology, if we’re not solving the right problem, the project fails.
Woody Williams

A clear scope statement is critical for a project to use resources efficiently. The more efficiently the resources are used the more value a project creates.

Here are some questions to ask to see if a scope statement is good.

  • Does the scope statement reflect the outcome of the project?
  • Can the scope statement be easily used for making decisions?
  • Can the scope statement be used to determine if an activity should be undertaken?
  • Does the scope statement define what is in scope and what is not in scope?

Test the scope statement on different aspects to see if the statement definitely states whether it is in or out of scope. Refine the scope statement where there are ambiguities. The ambiguities are either language, or the underlying scope is not clearly understood.

Having a clear scope statement gives a project a tool that helps the project be effective and efficient.
