One of my life values is fairness.
I realize that life is not fair, luck and happenstance make it that way.
Fairness, on the other hand, is a stand, a way of we as human beings should confront the fact that the world is not fair.
I want to live in a world that is fair. I want to live in a world where everyone has the opportunity to live a happy and meaningful life.
The only way that I can get the world closer to this is by valuing fairness.
If luck and happenstance give bad luck to someone, I feel it is my responsibility to help. If someone is disabled, they deserve to park closer to the entrance to make things fairer. If a parent is in a grocery line with kids that are being hard to control, I should let them go first.
A role model for me in terms of fairness is Keanu Reeves. One of the stories is: Keanu Reeves once gave up his seat on the crowded NYC subway for a fellow rider (insider.com) This is a great example of someone who values fairness and whose actions reflect it.
If I want to live in a world that is fairer, and I want my kids to live in a world that is fairer, the only thing I can do is to help counter the unfairness is to model this value.
