Two World Views

Utopia is a framework for utopias, a place where people are at liberty to join together voluntarily to pursue and attempt to realize their own vision of the good life in the ideal community but where no one can impose his own utopian vision upon others.
Robert Nozick

There are two overarching world views that influence all of our decisions. These views affect our personal lives and they affect how we view other people and how we deal with other people. To a great extent, they also affect politics and what types of rules and policies we feel should be in place.

The two world views are:

  • The view that we can always improve.
  • The view that people are inherently flawed and therefore at some point, they cannot be better.

I feel that the first view leads to us always striving for the ideal, that the utopias of science fiction are possible.

I feel that the second view leads to us making compromises and taking shortcuts, that the dystopian views of science fiction are the future.

I make the choice to believe in the former.
