Responsibility and Feedback

Corrective feedback is naturally difficult for people. But when done well, it’s also the greatest gift you can give to someone—because it can change people’s mindset and modify their behavior in the most positive, valuable way.
John Doerr

If you get irritated or upset with feedback it is an indication that you are not taking responsibility. You are pushing off the change you need to make and not taking responsibility to make the change.

If you make feedback negative and you focus on how low it makes you feel, your brain will steer you away from making the very choices you need to make.

You are solely responsible for your life. There are always opportunities to make your life better.  Avoid thinking that you have arrived.  Remember that if you feel you have arrived, there is always the opportunity to thrive.

When you receive corrective feedback that shows a better path or outlines a shortcoming in your current path, take it as a gift.  It is the opportunity to change your course and make your life better.

The stronger your initial reaction is an indication of how valuable the information is.

I give this advice to my children.

If you have a test where you don’t know the answers and you get upset at the teacher, you are not taking responsibility for your learning.  If you look at it as a gift, as an opportunity to understand what you know and what you don’t know it will enhance your learning. Become responsible and grateful for the opportunity. If the teacher is willing to help fill in the gaps of what you don’t know even better.

A failure is a success – just ask Thomas Edison – he failed 1000 times but viewed each as a success.

Seek out mentors that will tell you what is missing.  Your friends and family can be your cheerleaders

In order to have a life of freedom, you need options.  Feedback gives you options.  Even if you are not going to take the option today, knowing the options gives you the opportunity to take the option in the future.
