Everyone wants to be free, to have the option to make whatever decision they want.
Everyone also wants to be connected to be part of something that lasts. Sometimes that connection results in us losing some of our freedom. This is always a balance, it cannot be one or the other.
Since there is always a trade-off we need to be clear about the connections we make and the effect of those connections on our freedom.
If we are an employee we are connected to the company and become part of what the company does and represents. By being an employee we also lose some of our freedom. By analyzing the connection we may realize the connection is not as great as we think it is. A company can lay a person off with two weeks’ notice. This understanding may make us evaluate the value of the connection differently.
On the other hand, the connection may result in outcomes we want to be connected with. The loss of freedom may be worth it to create those outcomes.
Life is a series of decisions, and good decisions are based on understanding the underlying context.
