Always Use the Same Words

Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.

Part of a business analyst’s role is to help all stakeholders come to a shared understanding of a change.

Understanding the change requires the stakeholders to understand the domain and the context of the change.

Communicating the understanding comes down to language. When using language it becomes very important to pick the right word for explaining the different aspects of the change. This is where the value of a glossary comes in.

As the glossary is being created, it is important to have all parties agree on the word that will be used for different items in the glossary. It is OK to identify alternate words that have been used in the past but agree on the one word that will be used going forward.

Client, customer, buyer, stakeholder, or a person could all be used to describe an individual buying a product from an organization. By choosing one word over all the others will bring clarity to the organization. This way everyone is using the same terminology and viewing things from the same perspective.
